Today Torgeir, the expedition leader, and Øyvind, the skipper of «Tupac Yupaqui» are leaving for Lima, Peru. They have many tasks awaiting them, getting started with the building of the rafts, finding the equipment they need, teaching all of the building crew (both Norwegian and local) how to make a balsa raft. I will leave Norway Wednesday 21st of October and arrive Lima that same date. My flight both ways is very fortunate, 16 hours flight. Kristiansand-Amsterdam-Lima. I found it on Kilroy.no.

Once I get to Lima there will probably be a million things to do, but we are seven people in my crew, and I know that they are all willing to work their shirts off get depart on the set date, which is November 1st.

I am moving from Bergen to Kristiansand on Friday, and today wonderful people are helping us box all of our belongings. I’ve started experimenting with food that can be made on the raft, and today I am serving our helpers a vegetarian lasagna. The tomatosauce has curry, thyme, oregano, sugar and basilicum, and smells wonderful.

Under, you see a picture of a Pilot Chart of the South Pacific in November. I have made a clip with the Easter Island, Galapagos and the mainland of Peru. This is the area we will sail in. A Pilot Chart is a chart for a navigator showing the prevailing meteorological and hydrographic and navigational conditions. Monday, new week.

Today I’ve talked to Telenor Maritime Radio. They gave MMSI numbers to the rafts in five minutes! I was expecting this to be a long process, but I talked to a very friendly woman who registered the two rafts right away. Rahiti Tane, that I will be the skipper on, has MMSI 257 897 700 and callsignal LF5983. When I look for ships, I use an app called Marine Traffic. It will be possible to follow the rafts that way. We will also use the web page kontiki2.com to keep followers updated on the voyage.

I had an old neighbour for lunch and served my grandmother’s apple cake. As we are moving from Bergen to Kristiansand this week, I made a really large batch, and will serve cake to the «dugnad» crew who are helping out. Dugnad is a Norwegian word for helping others out. The people who help on projects like moving, garden work, construction get their rewards as food, drinks and IOUs. On Tuesday we will be packing all out things, on Wednesday we clean the apartment and on Thursday everything is put into the moving van. My uncle Ragnar and I are driving Bergen-Kristiansand on Friday.

Mormors eplekake:

xxx g sukker, 125 g smør:røres hvitt. Ha i x egg, 200g mel og x ts bakepulver. (dette er verdens beste deig). 1/2 Deigen presses ut i en smørsmurt form, man legger over 3-4 epler og drysser kanel og sukker over. Resten av deigen legges i et gitter over eplene. 200grader 30 minutter. Mormor og min søster Anne bruker selvsagt en rundt form og legger eplene i et pent mønster. Jeg laget den i en brødform i dag.

Boris, the doctor of Rahiti Tane sent me a picture today of the awesome medicine kits that the Russian doctors have put together. They are made following the guidelines of Radio Medico at Haukeland Universitetssykehus. We are in the best hands with Boris on board!

This blog is changing to (partly) English, as I see some Russian readers. Hello, Boris and Sergej.

A month ago, parts of the KonTiki2-expedition came together in Bergen to be trained by the doctors of Radio Medico at Haukeland University Hospital. I got to meet both Boris and Sergej. They are very friendly, and their English surprisingly fluant. Boris will be sailing on my raft, the Rahiti Tane. He works in Moscow as an anesthesiologist. Boris appears to be a very family centred man. I met his mother one day we were on Skype, and I hope to meet her at some point. Boris has a son who is a very skilled tap dancer, and who got married recently. I can imagine a russian wedding as a very pleasant (is it a russian wedding in the Deer Hunter?).

Boris plays the guitar and clarinet/saxophone. Musicality is important on a raft, and Cecilie is bringing her guitar. My knowledge about Russian music is limited to Jan Johanssons «Jazz på rysska», and I will bring that album on the raft. Boris and I talked about gypsy music, and Django Reinhart. I started linking this music in Kristiansand when I had a boyfriend who was a singer in Christiansand String Swing Ensemble, and I was introduced to a new universe of guitar play.  I remember a party at Smia in Skippergata where Hot Club de Norwege came after their concert. It was the first time I saw a really skilled guitar player improvise. I can’t remember his name. He was from Holland.

Sergej and I talked a little bit about music, and we soon started talking about rock. Iron Maiden has been to Bergen a couple of times over the years I have lived there, and I love their live shows. Last summer, I met Nico (the drummer) at Fiskebryggen and got star struck for the first time as an adult. Sergej went to Metallica in Moscow just a few weeks ago, his pictures on Facebook show him having a really good time.

Jeg har fått litt tips om hvilken musikk jeg burde ta med meg. En journalist fra svensk radio, Jens, synes Georgiansk folkemusikk er det nydeligste i verden. Det tar jeg med meg. Og Øyvind Solberg på Amalie Skram vgs anbefalte Bolero av Ravel, Peer Gynt Suiten av Grieg, Perlefiskerduetten av Bizet og Brandenburgerkonserten til Bach. Hvis noen har musikktips til meg, så tar jeg gjerne imot.

I love Beirut, Analogik, Farmers Market, Razika, Tom Waits, PJ Harvey, Iron Maiden, Hanne Kolstø, The Cure, The Smiths, Rachmaninov, Ojos de Brujo, Ozomatli, and all sorts of different music that reminds me of places and people.

Det er bare gått noen timer, og jeg er fristet til å skrive innlegg igjen. (Dette er prokrastinering på høyt nivå. Egentlig sitter jeg og skriver et refleksjonsnotat over IKTløsninger innen maritim logistikk. Sånt blir det blogg av…) Jeg har funnet ut av det å legge ut bilder, men vil gjerne få ut litt større dokumenter også. hmm. Og legge linker til nettsteder.

I går var jeg i Molde og traff Bjarne Krekvik som er styrmann på Christian Radich. Jeg hadde laget en lang liste over ting jeg lurte på med balsaflåteseiling, og han svarte. Bjarne er den eneste balsaflåteskipperen jeg vet om. Jeg søkte Cultiva Express om midler (før jeg fylte 36!) til å treffe en mentor, og jeg traff ham endelig i går. Typiske ting jeg fikk svar på var: Hvor er do, hva hadde dere mest bruk for, hva hadde dere ikke bruk for, hvor mye hai var det (egentlig), hvor mye solkrem brukte dere, hvem lagde mat, hvilken mat var best, hvordan gikk dere vakt, hvor sov dere, hva slags sikkerhetsutstyr hadde dere med dere, hvordan navigerte dere, hvilke stjerner er greie å finne ved solnedgang på den sydlige halvkule.. Vi snakket i ett fra vi kom inn døra til vi måtte løpe for å rekke flyet hjem.

Pål, som skal være styrmann om bord på Rahiti Tane, var med meg. Han jobber i DNV GL og kunne kombinere mentormøte med jobben sin. Pål er super på multitasking. Han blir min betazoid om bord på flåten, og noe av det første han skal gjøre i gruppen er å lede en «diversity icebreaker». Vi som skal seile sammen kjenner hverandre ikke, og må på kort tid fungere godt som lag. Pål reiser ned til Peru om bare en måned for å være med på å bygge flåten. Det er godt, for han er speider, og da blir knutene gode
