Today I am writing from Aguas Calientes/ Machu Picchu Pueblo. We are on a field trip taking in this beautiful country and people. I love speaking spanish again, and it did not take me long to get back into it this time.
It has been a long day, we woke up at 03:30 to catch the bus to the airport, and now I am going to bed.
I was robbed yesterday, and spent all evening in different police stations in Lima. I am calm about it now, but it was both annoying and scary. Annoying that my ipad, phones and visacard was stolen, scary to hang out of a taxi screaming my head off without anybody helping me. It was the common way to get robbed. «Ratas» surrounded the taxi, found an open window and managed to open the door. Our doors in the back were locked and windows closed. The driver had his window open. It was in Callao where it happens frequently.
I guess the fact that the driver had his window open was what sent us all around town. Maybe he was involved, at least he should have known better!
I am buing a telephone now, and will publish photos from the trip tomorrow.

I always sleep poorly the night before I fly out. But not this night. I worked in the garden for quite a few hours yesterday, and tok a bath before bed. It resulted in a good six hours sleep before we drove to the airport. At the airport, we had to move around on things to get the correct amount of weight in the different bags. It worked out well thanks to a lovely woman called Sissel at the KLM check-in. No stress, friendly, and correct. We had a cup of coffe, and Jan tried a smoothie called «ugly but lovely», and it really was. Green, thick and sweet. The security check was OK, and writing this I am on my first flight from Kristiansand to Amsterdam. So far so great.

Jan and Bjørn (the labrador) are sleeping. They have been out in the yard working all day. I have helped out also, trying to wear myself out, so that I can get some decent sleep tonight. But knowing myself, I will not get ore than a couple of hours in.

I have been to and from the house today.
Had a coffee with my dear friend Maja, printed out the KonTiki2 Emergency Response Plan and laminated it at my parents’ place, went home, got the two boxes from Stormberg delivered, and also three suitcases from Håkon in Oslo. I am definitely NOT travelling light this time.
The others bragged about 70 kg overweight. I have at least a hundred. I have no chance og getting anywhere on my own, and have asked the crew to come and get me at the airport tomorrow. My flight is at 06:45, I will have a four hour stop in Amsterdam, and be safe in Peru at 18:00, local time. It is amazing how quickly one changes surroundings.

My last minute laundry just beeped. I will go and line everything up for departure. Passport, money, documentation, pad, book, suitcase, sun glasses, shoes etc. I hope I don’t forget the important things. But I have been writing packing lists for 9 months now, so it should all be there…

Stormberg delivers!

Skjermbilde 2015-10-19 kl. 17.25.10
Lots of last minute shopping and arrangements to be made, bank arrangements, health has to be checked. I bought a compass and sailing lanterns at Navigare. It was on 50% sale- lucky us! My bag is filling up with all sorts of gear.
I was informed that Stormberg is sponsering us with some clothing, and it will be delivered to our house today or tomorrow. I am also getting three suitcases from Oslo. That makes it a total of 7 suitcases… I am lucky to have Jan who helps me. I also managed to put in a few hours of gardening. Worked up a sweat sawing trees, clearing the jungle.

Returning to Kristiansand (for two days)

piece-of-cake-236804_1920
My friends from Kristiansand Katedralskole, Elin and Nicole, came to visit me in Farsund today. They were on a Thelma&Louise-trip, and it was wonderful to see them. I showed them «Ægir», and we walked around Farsund for a while. I showed them «Mormors butikk» and «Joy», the gallery of the skipper’s wife. Apple Sunday was celebrated both in Farsund and in Kristiansand. We had both «tilslørte bondepiker» and «mormors eplekake» in at my parent’s house. My sister-in-law’s dad and his wife were ther with us. My brother Ola and Anna got married in May, and we all spent the weekend in the wonderful surroundings of Hestenesøra.

Friendly Farsund

kontikikari - tekopp

Today I met some wonderful people in a charming, little shop called «mormors butikk». Mormor saw me looking at her second hand things, and asked if I wanted a cup of coffee. When I accepted, I was sat down and given cinemon rolls a costumer had brought. Her son was there, and after a while her husband came. We talked about work and life and Redningsselskapet. They told me about a museum close by with an amfibium car that RS used for a while. (Fun fact: in 1958 they drove it by water to Lyngdal (it almost sank on the way!) and then drove it to Oslo for a gathering for RS). I want one of those!! Mormor gave me the coffe cup I drank from, just because I liked it. And three more cups and a milk mug and a suger cup. I will bring the cup on my voyage.

So, I will make a proper blog.

I bought the domain a week ago, my new friend Mona in Arenal i managing the page for me. She is the one who has set up the whole thing! And she has offered to publish my blogs from the South Pacific Ocean. We will have connection through satellite, but the connection is not good enough to send films, pictures and other media-files. I will bring an iPad, iPhone 5, a Sony Experia for pictures and a Kindle for the books. That’s it for me and technology.

Morning thoughts

sunrise-209146_1920
I wake up before my collegues. I make a pot of coffee and crawl back to my bunk with a cup of coffee. I love this morning hour where the boat is quiet, and I can hear the city slowly waking up. When there is rain, I can hear it drumming on the deck just one meter above my head. When there is wind, I hear the wavelets playing around the poles of the pier and the bow. Sometimes ducks have breakfast discussions close to my head.
Another way to wake up on a SARboat is the skipper knocking on your door: «TUR. Mann i sjøen». No time to think, body awake, clothes on, on deck in less than a minute. The sunrise can be equally beautiful, the ducks are hanging around, but it looses its importance.
I appeciate that my work lets me see the contrasts in life. I see how fragile humans are, yet we are strong beyond belief when it comes to survival. Some people get stressed on a calm day, and others stay calm while they are sinking.
I also appreciate the gratitude and respect I receive from the people we assist. Even the little jobs, checking a shaking propeller, giving a boost to an empty battery, are important to the person who needs just that service to get on with her plans.
And I love the children who sees the boat from the other side of the dock and pull their parent along to see Elias. They talk and want to get close. When I go out, they hide behind their parent and go all quiet. I talk to the parent and wait for the child to find his/her balance and then we walk around outside on the boat. If they get comfortable, we go inside, and they get to sit in the skipper chair. Yesterday, we had to of those visits, and they were just lovely. One came with his grandfather, the other was on tour with his musician father.

A week before departure…

kontiki-kari 1
My collegue asked me today: Are you nervous?
I thought about it, and no- the nervousness has passed. There is a tingling feeling in my stommache, but I sleep well at night, and things seem to fall into place.
There are some important equipment that is still in costums, the raft is not even close to being ready to sail, I have not packed my bags- but I am as ready as I will ever be.
I feel strong and confident.
