Flåter og sånn…

kontiki2-5922

A week at sea

Kari 4

As a wake-up call at six this morning, the insane squeeking next to my ear stopped. The wind has changed, is more gentle and so are the waves. The temperature inside our cabin increased at least five degrees. I have been wearing my thickest, double layered Brynje underwear for a week. Maybe i can hang it out to air it today.
We are having our first Laugardag. It is called bakkestørn on the ships i have worked before. Everyone participates in cleaning the ship, one area each. Cecilie, the oceanographer, often referred to as «mor», will organize us. I have suggested that everyone takes their bedclothes out for air, and that we take a bath after the job is done. My friends Nicole and Elin gave me some lovely fremst before I left, and I also brought a honey body-scrub that my old neighbour Chelsea gave me in Sandsli.

Update!

dorado kontiki2

Today there was a dorado on the line. It managed to get away because the hook was too small. Pål, who was reeling it in put on his lucky fishing hat that we got from Dr Hook, Geir Salvesen. The hooks that are on now are much larger.
Yesterday we had some lovely dorado for dinner, and ceviche for lunch today. We cheated a bit getting it… We were keeping the two rafts together for some repairs of crew and electronics, doctor and electroengineer went to oposite rafts. Some of the sailors swam over to be on the «girl» raft for the afternoon. And they were right to do that! Cecilie had used the outmeal porridge and the rest of our mango to make an amazing bread. We have lots of cheese and the boys were properly wow’ed.

Watches are running smoothly except for Esteban, who is still sea sick. We are trying to let him get enough rest, love and medicine to get him on his feet shortly.

We are at sea!

flåten kontiki2

The winds are southerly, but we managed to keep 220-280 on the compass over night. Not bad maneuvering something totally new.

The tow out 30 nm to sea was the worst part so far. Rahiti Tane was in front and Tupac Yupanqui behind. We had 60 m of line in each direction, but the pull on our raft was intense. We had to stop the tug twice to rearrange the lines and put in hardwood and spett to keep the aft balsalog from splitting. I was not happy and stayed up most of the night.

The day got really busy as well. Clearing our bunks, the deck, adjusting guaras, putting the dighy on water to get some toolsfrom the other raft, and finally SETTING SAIL. The other vessel have more experience than us, and are sailing higherand faster. But theyhave towaitforus, that is the agreement. We SAIL together. The forecast is loosing good, and most oft the crew have found their sea legs.

So far the food has been amazing. Signe managed to fire up the galley during the tow and made the most amazing fridd vegetables, and a cooking tip: grate ginger into the soy sauce. Cooking tip 2: keep the avokado-Stone in the guacamole and it does not turn brown.

Now: a little bit of morning yoga and meteorological observation with Cecilie. WE bring you the weather of Humbolt current!!!

Yellow fever shot-day

syringe-957260_1280

Since Øyvind and I are skippers, we will be the only registred crew aboard. Today, we took our vaksination. We had to bring our passports, although a woman in the senter where we got the vaksination said the street was muy peligroso. I am quite nervous about loosing the passport and other papers now that we are getting so close to departure.
The shot was put in my upper arm, and it felt like I got some extra energy from it. At least I went out for dinner with Signe, Gunvor and Ola. And we met Jostein, Espen, Katarina and Ida. Then Pål and Geir showed up. We are many people here now, 25 in total, but most everybody are going home today or tomorrow. They have been absolutely amazing. Happy even though their days have been long, food poor and rooms crowded.

Konsulatet

bilde (2)

Hun hadde  lunsjpause..
————————–
It took an hour to get to the consulate. It took about an hour to fill out the papers and have the pictures taken, and it takes about an hour to get further with immigration. It takes yet another hour and all of a sudden we´re in the midst of rush hour traffic. And to no surprise, the challenge of some holiday with a parade in the city centre. But I´ve figured it out now – you have to call satiltel, the cap company. Hopefully you won´t get robbed then…..
I am now outside the immigration office. One hour of traffic jam and then another hour to wait for «la doctora» who can sign the papers. She was on a lunch break. Then yet another hour to get back to the wharf. So all in all, a complete work day.

I´m such a mess

cartoon-718659_1920

My head is spinning. Haven´t got enough sleep lately, which resulted in me losing my Visa card. Like I hadn´t lost enough the last week :-O I called Jorge, our cab driver as I planned to go back to the book store tomorrow. But lo and behold, Gunvor found the Visa card – right in front of the container on the building site. Sometimes, all you need is luck!
