Sunrise and updates

Sunday morning: I wake up in the station of RS 147 Inge Steensland in Arenal. I have put my bed in front of the window, and wake up at sunrise every morning. A man paddles by in his kayak, and the birds are drinking dew off the bush by my window. The forecast has told us that it will be another great day.
Torgeir Higraff, the expedition leader, sent me this article a few days ago. I haven’ read the whole thing yet, but is starts saying:
Between 1947 and 2006, nearly forty expeditions set out in recreated maritime drift vessels to demonstrate hypotheses with varying levels of relevance to archaeology and cultural diffusion. This paper divides the motivations of these expeditions into four major categories; examines more closely the expeditions that were based on serious scientific hypotheses; and establishes criteria for ranking the eleven expeditions deemed to have produced archaeologically significant results.
I got a mail from Torgeir today giving some news on the raft. It will be 7,5 m wide and 15 meters on the longest beam. It quite a lot smaller than I expected. But still, close to 100m2 is an acceptable raft size. We will only have one mast which will hopefully enable us to sail closer to the wind than the Tangaroa and the KonTiki.

Lobster lines, iPads and knives

KonTikiKari 2
A few busy days at work. We have had four scuba dives on vessels who got lobster-lines around their propellers, a young couple needed help to have their boat moved around the port of Grimstad, and the pilot has been out a few times to take in vessels to Arendal.
I have ordered an iPad for the Kon-Tiki2 trip. Greenphones in Tvedestrand had just the right kind for me. And it was used and unwanted, which made it even more attractive to me. Now I just need to find a waterproof case for it and download all the apps that I can use with Iridium go. We will be using iridium go on the voyage. I am excited to see how it works. There is satellite coverage all over the world, and the South Pacific should be no exception. Still, I haven’t tested it yet.
Here are some of the tools that I am bringing to Peru for the Kon-Tiki voyage. Knives are important booth for safety and work, so I am bringing quite a few.. Here are some tools that are mainly for rig-work.

Last day of September – and only 3 weeks to go

The last day of the month- 3 weeks until I depart from Norway.
Yesterday I spoke with Signe, who is going on my raft Rahiti Tane. She is going to sail as skipper on the way back from Easter Island to Peru. She will be one of the watch officers on the first leg of the voyage. We spoke about the sailing- how close to the wind can we sail, how will the bracing be affected by the masts if we reef the sails etc. There are so many exciting aspects to this journey! I am still confident that we will sail really well and get to the Easter Island in good time to get home before Christmas. But there are some challenges: El nino, learning to sail the raft, and getting the crew together as a strong and confident group.
There is a new crew member on the raft. The final guy. I am super excited that he is coming along! I met him once in Bergen, and he made a really good first impression. He is going to be presented both in Chile and on the http://KonTiki2.com/ web page really soon.
Tomorrow the lobster season starts in Norway. I am stationed in Arenal on RS 147 Inge Steensland, and I believe this week end will be very busy. The forecast is quite good with light winds and sun, so I hope everyone will keep their ropes out of their propellers and enjoy some good days at sea.

24.09
Stowing the truck.
We rented a 35m3 truck from Hertz, which we filled up with all of out things in under three hours with good help from friends and family!
25.09
Moving from Bergen.
My uncle and I drove the 8 hour drive to Kristiansand, and never once stopped talking. I love drives like that. People were waiting for us as we pulled up to Erling Skakkes vei, and we emptied the truck in less than two hours! Friends stopped by for a visit and to have a few house warming drinks. My friend Nicole’s parents brought apple cake and whipped cream. My mon brought her delicious Mulligatawny soup. At midnight I was home after picking up Jan at the airport.
26.09
First night in our new home
I fell asleep looking at Ursa Major, and woke up with Taurus peeping in the bedroom window. When I got up, the sunrise was orange and blue and beautiful
27.09
Resting day.
Walked in the forest called Baneheia and found the mushrooms I know, kantarell and traktkantarell. My parents invited us for dinner, and they brought dessert to our new home to see how installed we had gotten.
28.09
Back to work
I was meant to go to Egersund for work, but for some reason I ended up in Arendal, which is both closer to Kristiansand and has a more interesting boat to maneuver. Colleagues seem great and we sleep in proper beds in an apartment rather than a small cabin on a boat. I am happy to get the privacy before I go on the raft for 6 weeks.

Today I am off to get some sailmaking/repair gear for the rafts. We have palms and some needles, but need thread and some tools. I hope to find it all at Seilmaker Larsen in Sandviken. I also have to stop and try to find a compass and I will stop by the Lehmkuhl office and say good-bye. Maybe they have some gear I can borrow for our trip.

I will post some pictures later, off I go..

The first lot sets off to Lima, Peru

[et_pb_section admin_label=»section»][et_pb_row admin_label=»row»][et_pb_column type=»4_4″][et_pb_text admin_label=»Tekst» background_layout=»light» text_orientation=»left» use_border_color=»off» border_color=»#ffffff» border_style=»solid»]

Today Torgeir, the expedition leader, and Øyvind, the skipper of «Tupac Yupaqui» are leaving for Lima, Peru. They have many tasks awaiting them, getting started with the building of the rafts, finding the equipment they need, teaching all of the building crew (both Norwegian and local) how to make a balsa raft. The weather is not too bad, 22 degrees and sunny. (http://www.yr.no/sted/Peru/Lima_By/Lima/langtidsvarsel.html)

I will leave Norway Wednesday 21st of October and arrive Lima that same date. My flight both ways is very fortunate, 16 hours flight. Kristiansand-Amsterdam-Lima. I found it on Kilroy.no.

Once I get to Lima there will probably be a million things to do, but we are seven people in my crew, and I know that they are all willing to work their shirts off get depart on the set date, which is November 1st.

I am moving from Bergen to Kristiansand on Friday, and today wonderful people are helping us box all of our belongings. I’ve started experimenting with food that can be made on the raft, and today I am serving our helpers a vegetarian lasagna. The tomatosauce has curry, thyme, oregano, sugar and basilicum, and smells wonderful.

Under, you see a picture of a Pilot Chart of the South Pacific in November. I have made a clip with the Easter Island, Galapagos and the mainland of Peru. This is the area we will sail in. A Pilot Chart is a chart for a navigator showing the prevailing meteorological and hydrographic and navigational conditions. Here you can find them for the whole planet http://msi.nga.mil/NGAPortal/MSI.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=msi_portal_page_62&pubCode=0003

Apple crumble and medicine kit

Monday, new week.

Today I’ve talked to Telenor Maritime Radio. They gave MMSI numbers to the rafts in five minutes! I was expecting this to be a long process, but I talked to a very friendly woman who registered the two rafts right away. Rahiti Tane, that I will be the skipper on, has MMSI 257 897 700 and callsignal LF5983. This link shows what the number consists of and what it can be used for.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maritime_Mobile_Service_Identity).

When I look for ships, I use an app called Marine Traffic. It will be possible to follow the rafts that way. We will also use the web page kontiki2.com to keep followers updated on the voyage.

I had an old neighbour for lunch and served my grandmother’s apple cake. As we are moving from Bergen to Kristiansand this week, I made a really large batch, and will serve cake to the «dugnad» crew who are helping out. Dugnad is a Norwegian word for helping others out. The people who help on projects like moving, garden work, construction get their rewards as food, drinks and IOUs. On Tuesday we will be packing all out things, on Wednesday we clean the apartment and on Thursday everything is put into the moving van. My uncle Ragnar and I are driving Bergen-Kristiansand on Friday.

Mormors eplekake:

xxx g sukker, 125 g smør:røres hvitt. Ha i x egg, 200g mel og x ts bakepulver. (dette er verdens beste deig). 1/2 Deigen presses ut i en smørsmurt form, man legger over 3-4 epler og drysser kanel og sukker over. Resten av deigen legges i et gitter over eplene. 200grader 30 minutter.

Boris, the doctor of Rahiti Tane sent me a picture today of the awesome medicine kits that the Russian doctors have put together. They are made following the guidelines of Radio Medico at Haukeland Universitetssykehus. We are in the best hands with Boris on board!

Fine folk og fint lesestoff

Good morning,

Yesterday was my mothers’ birthday. She called me up as we were eating our last dinner out in Bergen (at Spesial), telling me that it was her birthday, and I had probably forgotten it. She knows me well!

So today Jan stayed in bed all day after meeting up with his friends until late, and I found a beautiful gift for my mother at Twisted. It will be a gift from an embarrassed daughter, and a thank-you-for-looking-after-our-dog-for-two-weeks as we are moving from Bergen to Kristiansand. She is (of course) getting a yellow rain coat from Bergen.

I have been mailing with Håkon Wium Lie the last few day. He is a co-expeditioner, but will be on the other raft. He is going to Peru next week, and will test our communication equipment. We have VHFs to communicate with other vessels close by. We have a system called Iridium go for e-mails and telephone contact. I have not tried it yet, but all the ships I have been on have had iridium telephones. It is a strong brand. As far as I can see, the Iridium go is a little box that you connect your smartphone to, and then the call/connection goes via satellite. We will also have the electronic charts that I use at work in Redningsselskapet, and hopefully their weather forecasts can be downloaded in the South Pacific Ocean. I am happy that we have some time to try out the equipment before we set out to sea.
